The start of my dog’s joint pain

I was devastated when the veterinarian told me my 10-year-old Siberian Husky, Diesel, suffered from joint pain and arthritis.

No dog owner wants their pup to be in pain.

But there was hope. I’ve administered full-spectrum CBD oil to Diesel for four years to ease his separation anxiety.

Dog owners who reviewed CBD products claimed it helped calm their dogs, and I wanted to try it myself.

The difference was noticeable in Diesel before and after CBD- he still whines when I leave the house but calms down faster and is more complacent.

In the reviews, owners also said it helped with their dog’s joint paint and provided comfort.

So, after Diesel was diagnosed with arthritis, I upped his CBD oil dosage to 8 drops daily.

There was an even bigger change! Without CBD oil, he moves a lot more slowly on our walks. Within an hour of taking it, he’s back to being a puppy. Zoomies are slow and short-lived now, but my boy is back! Best of all, there is less joint pain in his legs.

It’s important to note that CBD isn’t for everyone. Still, I wanted to share my positive experience with CBD and help other dog parents who want an alternative way to ease their dog’s joint pain and other conditions.

How CBD works

CBD works very similarly in humans and dogs. All mammals- dogs, cat, horses, humans, etc.- have an endocannabinoid system that regulates various physiological processes, like mood regulation. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, primarily the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Interactions aren’t strong, but they are strong enough to modulate their activity and affect the release of other receptors, such as serotonin.

The benefits of CBD for dogs (and humans!) may include:

  • Reduced discomfort and pain in the joints, providing relief.
  • Improvement in movement and mobility
  • Less anxiety from uncomfortable situations, like being alone and fireworks
  • Improved mood and sleep
  • Increased appetite, fewer nausea symptoms and vomiting
  • Reduced seizure frequency and severity in dogs with epilepsy and other seizure disorders
After CBD, Diesel is ready to play catch at the park.

Administering CBD to dogs

To treat my dog’s joint pain, I use Nuleaf Naturals full-spectrum CBD oil and administer it directly to his mouth using a dropper.

Diesel doesn’t mind the taste (he likes to munch on grass occasionally, and CBD has a similar taste and smell), so that hasn’t been an issue.

However, I have trouble giving him his monthly flea/heartworm pill, so I have several ways to mask the smell or flavor of a supplement:

  • Mix with peanut butter or other nut butter
  • Put the drops on some bread, plus your choice of nut butter
  • Top it on their dry or wet food
  • Add it to unsweetened yogurt (Diesel loves greek yogurt!)
  • A few drops of honey can make CBD oil more appealing
  • Water can dilute the CBD flavor

Start with a small amount and praise them when they consume it. Then you can build on that.

Another way to administer CBD is through food or treats. There are dog products available that already contain CBD, like soft and hard chews.

But if you’d rather make it yourself, there are plenty of homemade CBD dog treats recipes online.

Does CBD contain THC?

“What if I get him high instead of relieving my dog’s joint pain?” It’s a funny thought but a valid concern.

CBD (cannabidiol) comes from the hemp plant, and it contains no more than 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), according to federal law.

That’s a low amount, and it won’t get your dog “high.”

This is why CBD is popular among those who want its benefits but do not want any psychoactive effects. In standard dosages, there are no harmful side effects.

An alternative way to treat your dog’s joint pain

If your furry best friend has arthritis or separation anxiety, I recommend trying CBD. Talk with your veterinarian and conduct your research before introducing CBD into your dog’s regimen.

I’ve found it a great alternative to soothe my dog’s joint pain; he is thriving even in his old age. I’m hoping that sharing my experience can help someone else as well.

Once you’ve talked to your vet and done your research, I recommend trying Nuleaf Naturals products. As a long-time customer, I’m satisfied with their service and products.
